PhlebotomyUSA | Michigan | FAQ’s
Phlebotomy literally means “to cut a vein” in Greek. It is the process of making an incision (we call it a puncture) in a vein for the purpose of collecting blood. A person who performs phlebotomy is termed a “Phlebotomist”.
We offer Day, Evening, and Weekend schedules at our Michigan locations. All of which are 40 hours. Please click here to find a location that you are interested in attending and see what start times are available near you!
Students must be at least 18 years old and have a High School Diploma (or the equivalent of a diploma) in order to register. In the state of Michigan, PTS does not require students provide us with a copy of your Diploma or Equivalent.
We know it can be scary, but we require all students (outside of medical exemptions) to participate in order to understand what others experience when you will draw their blood. Instead of declining to participate at all, you may just limit the number of times you have your own blood drawn. We adhere to the practice of “I stick you, you stick me” in the classroom, in order to provide our students with exceptional hands-on training.
Attendance at every class is vital to your ability to take and pass the national exam. If unforeseen circumstances arise, we will do our best to work with you on making up what you miss. Students in Michigan must complete 9/10 class modules, and complete 36 classroom hours. The first eight hours of class are mandatory, because of the foundational material covered during this time. Please do your best to plan your schedule ahead of time to attend every class, as makeup classes may not be available until the next cohort of classes.
The VeinViewer™ utilizes Active Vascular Imaging Navigation technology (AVIN) to see through a patients skin, and provide you a real time digital map of their vessels. Phlebotomy Training Specialists is the only school in the United States to make the financial commitment to students to be able to utilize this cutting-edge technology equipment in the classroom setting.
Students can enroll on specific city pages by selecting the course schedule they would like to attend.
There is no deadline for registration. As long as the course is displayed on our website – that means that it is open for you to register for it. Once the class fills up or starts, the course will automatically close and will show us “FULL” on our website.

Scrubs for the class are not required, but highly recommended. Students who choose not to wear scrubs should come dressed in conservative clothing with closed-toed shoes. Short sleeves are preferred to allow access to arms for blood drawing.
You can make a payment online through your student account or over the phone with one of our Student Representatives. To login to your student account go to http://students.phlebotomyusa.com/, click on your course, and then click “Add a Payment”
Please email our financial department at payments@phlebotomyusa.com to get that all setup. They will respond within 1-2 business days.
At Phlebotomy Training Specialists, we understand that each person has a unique set of circumstances, and we offer a payment plan to accommodate all potential students. Because we are a private institution, we DO NOT accept financial aid, however, we DO accept vouchers from third-party payers who are willing to pay for private education.
Our payment plan works by requiring ONLY the deposit to register and secure a seat in class. Students will then have from the day they pay the deposit up until halfway through their class to pay their remaining balance. We also allow and encourage registration up to 3 months in advance. This allows students ample time to make payments in order to be paid by the time their class starts.
We offer our students the freedom to decide when they would like to make payments and how much they would like to pay as long as the remaining balance is paid off by the halfway point of the class. Payments can be made conveniently online with any major credit card at any time through the Student Portal, or over the phone with Student Services.
If you are unable to make full payment by these deadlines, please call Student Services at 701-404-9434 to discuss available options for extension. Extensions will not be permitted passed the last day of class.
We accept all major debit/credit cards. All payments are done online through the website or over the phone with a Student Representative. We DO NOT accept cash or checks unless a 3rd party payer is paying for your tuition. If you have a 3rd party payer paying for your class, please contact payments@phlebotomyusa.com before you begin the registration process.
On the last day of the training, students that meet all associated requirements, students will take their exam through the NHCO (National Healthcare Certification Organization) in our facility.
PTS meets national averages for passing rates, but if students do not pass on their first try, they will contact Student Services to be scheduled for the soonest available exam date. There are no additional fees for any retakes. PTS is also happy to welcome students back into the classroom for additional review hours before they retake the test.
A passing score for the NHCO exam is approximately 71% or higher.
Externships are not a requirement in the state of Michigan! Phlebotomy Training Specialists has created a clinical setting in the classroom, making students able to complete all practice and hands on training during class!
We do not offer job placement; however, you will receive exceptional training to help you get a job. During the course, your instructor will give advice on how to find and interview for potential phlebotomy jobs. Talk to your instructor about being listed as a reference for your resume! Instructors can even write students letters of recommendation to help students find work.
MANY places of employment reach out to PTS asking to hire our Phlebotomists, and we will always pass these leads on to you!
As soon as students complete the course in its entirety, they are entitled to our Student for Life Promise. We believe in a lifetime of learning, and after graduation, we welcome our students back at any time to brush up on skills, perform additional blood draws, and gather any new industry information. Enrollment into these classes is subject to availability.
