California Phlebotomy Certification Class

80 hour Laboratory Field Services and California Department of Public Health approved Phlebotomy Training & Certification Class

Approval to operate means compliance with state standards as set forth in the California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009.

Class Structure:

  1. 40 hours of didactic in class phlebotomist training.
  2. National Exam – scheduled at your convenience after you complete class.
  3. 40 hour externship scheduled after you get your exam results (Completed in one week working 8-5 – Not available on Saturday)
  4. All paperwork will then be sent to corporate for processing.
  5. Processed paperwork returned so you can apply and gain your California Phlebotomy License – CPT1

The Phlebotomy class in California is a fast-paced, dynamic learning environment. The completion of this class will qualify you to obtain your state license from the California Department of Public Health – Division of Laboratory Field Services. Upon completion of the 40 hours of in-class book and hands-on training, you will take the National Certification examination through the National Healthcareer Association.

 

After you pass the exam, you will be assigned to a 40-hour Clinical Experience. PTS currently maintains over 500 active externship contracts statewide ensuring you can get in and done as quickly as possible. Phlebotomy Training Specialists have day, evening, and weekend classes at most locations, and an accelerated program at a few locations as well as hands-on training using VeinViewer technology.

Phlebotomy Certification Requirements in California

With the high demand, attractive salary, and flexible hours, it’s no wonder more people are interested in becoming certified phlebotomy technicians.  Phlebotomists are responsible for drawing blood from patients for many reasons. Reasons may include medical testing, transfusions, or research and carefully handling the samples to ensure the integrity of the results. 

 

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulates phlebotomy certification and has specific requirements you must meet. There are three certifications in California, each with a set of requirements that must be met:

 

Limited Phlebotomy Technician

A Limited Phlebotomist Technician is only authorized to perform skin puncture blood collection. These professionals can only work under the direct supervision of a phlebotomist, physician, or registered nurse. To qualify as a limited phlebotomy technician in California, you must:

 

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Take and pass the National Phlebotomy Certification Test from an approved phlebotomy program.
  • Complete at least 20 hours of instruction through a CDPH-approved phlebotomy program.
  • Be able to show 25 skin punctures in clinical training
  • Formally apply to the CDPH for phlebotomy certification

 

Phlebotomy Technician I

A Phlebotomy Technician I is authorized to perform venipuncture and skin puncture blood collections. This level’s certification requirements are similar to the limited phlebotomy technician, with a few additional requirements:

 

  • Take and pass the National Phlebotomy Certification Test from an approved phlebotomy program.
  • Successful completion of 40 hours of instruction through a CDPH-approved program.
  • Complete 40 hours of practical training and be able to show 50 venipunctures and ten skin punctures in clinical training
  • Formal application to the CDPH for certification as a phlebotomy technician 1

 

Phlebotomy Technician II

A Phlebotomy Technician II is authorized to perform venipuncture, skin puncture, and arterial puncture blood collections. This is the highest phlebotomy certification in California and has complex requirements:

 

  • Be a current CDPH licensed phlebotomy technician 1 with at least 1040 hours of phlebotomy experience in the last five years
  • Successful completion of 20 arterial punctures in clinical training. As well as posse a written order from a CDPH-approved practitioner authorizing the performance of arterial punctures.
  • Formal application to the CDPH for Phlebotomy Technician II certification
